2024 Education and Outreach: STEM Corp: Educating the next generation of leaders to engage K-12 students in STEM
Graduate students developed Education Modules
for elementary and high school students
•Starburst Rock Cycle –fundamentals of rock formation and how a material’s properties are dependent on their processing
•Music and Sound Waves –physics behind acoustics and how sound travels through a medium
•Paper Shields – the importance of material microstructure and composition, with a focus on biology and biomimicry
•Carbon Capture Crystals and Foldscopes – phase transformations and crystal structure of materials important for carbon capture
Participants toured UC Irvine Advanced Casting Research Center and Irvine Materials Research Institute
•California Elementary School: 50 elementary school students per activity on February 9 and March 15, 2024.
•Vista Heritage Global Academy: 15 middle school students per activity on October 5, 2023.
•Middle and high school students visited UCI: 34 middle school students, 19 high school students, and 5 teachers from Vista Heritage Academy visited UCI on January 31, 2024.
