The Materials Research Experiences for Undergraduates is an 8-week summer program at UC Irvine, with a focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new materials for energy, healthcare, aerospace, and environmental sustainability. The program is intended for rising junior and senior undergraduates who are interested in learning more about graduate school in a STEM field. Students from minoritized communities are encouraged to apply.

The Materials REU summer program, scheduled from June 23 to August 16, 2024, has extended its application deadline to March 6, 2024. Materials REU 2023

This year’s program ran June 25 – August 18, 2023. 13 undergraduate students from various institutions, including one outside the US, participated in various events and activities including materials bootcamps related to computations, synthesis, imaging, CCAM faculty seminars, and STEM workshops hosted by the UCI Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). These activities were designed to promote student interest in STEM careers, and helped them adapt and engage in their own research at UCI under the supervision of an REU faculty advisor and JRF mentor(s). Projects varied from the all-solid-state batteries to bio-molecular materials. Students presented their work during the research symposium in mid-August.

The program was successfully completed thanks to the robust partnership with and strong support from Stacey Nicholas Office of Access & Inclusion (Executive Director: Analia Rao) in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering.
