Profile

Ich Tran is a project scientist, managing the Surface Science Facility (SSF) at Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI). Educated and trained in engineering physics and physical chemistry, he has more than 20 years of research and development in the fields with extensive experience in techniques, instrumentation, and applications of advanced materials characterizations: synchrotron-based x-ray spectroscopy, microscopy and scattering (XAS, XES, STXM, SAXS); in-lab photoelectron, Auger electron spectroscopy and microscopy (XPS, UPS, SAM, AES), scanning electron (SEM) and scanning probe microscopy (STM, AFM). Prior to joining UCI, Ich was a research staff member (Chemist, Materials Characterization Scientist) at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, conducting DOE-funded research in the national interest in advanced materials development and characterization. His research accomplishments have been published in media by U.S. National Laboratories (LLNL and Berkeley Lab), first place poster awarded by Materials Research Society, showcased in the UNLV “Innovation Magazine” and peer-reviewed journals. He has experience working in national synchrotron radiation facilities, including user training and user support, and closely collaborates with researchers from other U.S. National Laboratories, Research Institutes and National Research User Facilities.

Education

PhD, University of Nevada, Las Vegas 2008

Research

Tran’s research interest focuses on applications of surface science techniques to the development of advanced materials for energy conversion and storage, biomimetic nanoelectronics, nanomaterials and efficient combustion technology. He is supportive and enjoys training new users of the IMRI. He is interested in collaborations with other internal/external researchers and can serve as PI or Co-PI in research proposals.
